Homemade Egg Nog.

I thought I would just pop on an added extra today! For the first time ever, I have ventured into the realms of making egg nog. I have searched the internet for several recipes and they all were vastly different! I am having a German themed Christmas this year, and their version is called 'Eierlikor'. Yet again, the ingredients varied from each recipe and most of the recipes were to make big batches of it.  I could have modified them I know, but I was also looking for a simple and easy recipe to make quickly. This version definitely fitted the bill!

I still have some reservations about it if I'm honest as it contains a raw egg white. I do however buy organic eggs and I checked the shells for holes and cracks. I like this recipe because it was to serve two people. I have to say that it's one large serving or two small servings.

Now that I've experienced this version, I'm going to search for a recipe that doesn't include the use of raw eggs as I want to serve it at Christmas time to my guests, and as they are elderly I do not want any health risks.

My verdict: I really did enjoy it and the brandy certainly gave it a kick compared to the usual egg nog that I buy from Starbucks! The addition of the grated nutmeg on top gave it a great taste too!

The recipe:

1 Organic/ Free range Egg
4 tsps Caster sugar
120 ml ( 4fl oz) Milk
30 ml ( 1fl oz) Double cream
60 ml  ( 2 fl oz) Brandy
Grated nutmeg to taste.

Method:

Separate the egg white and yolk into two separate bowls. Add equal amounts of the sugar into each bowl ( 2 tsp each). Beat the yolk mix until smooth and whisk the egg white mix until frothy.

Gently warm the milk and cream in a pan but do not boil. Pour the brandy and the heated milk/cream over the yolk, stir it in slowly. Fold the egg white in with a spatula.

Serve in a sturdy glass and grate fresh nutmeg over the top. Drink immediately whilst it's warm.

I served mine in my special German Mulled Wine glass or Gluhwein Glass that I brought back from Dortmund recently.
I guess that's next on the agenda.....to make some Gluhwein!
I hope you make the Egg Nog and enjoy it!

                                          Love Sarah. xx
